Main Street of Yesteryear

A dwindling number of people can recall the stores that once lined both sides of Main Street . . . Shopping in Paterson was incomplete without a stop at Quackenbush's, which offered quality goods for decades. But the department store that was synonymous with Paterson, a family-owned and managed store with legions of admirers, was Meyer Brothers. Located at 179 Main Street, the building occupied an entire city block. It had five floors, almost 80 departments, and, during the holiday, employed nearly 1,000 people.
