Starting Your Discussion

You are getting together with your group and you are eager to hear how your fellow bookclub members enjoyed the book selection.

How to get started:

  • Begin with the person who recommended the book and learn why he or she suggested it.
  • Ask members to give their opinions of author's key message. Any major differences in interpretation? Explore why.
  • Examine the narrator's voice. Any need to be curious of narrator's motives or ability to record the facts?
  • Explore the tone of the narration and any changes in narrator.
  • Under the category of plot discussion, identify protagonist and any antagonists, and talk about motives of protagonist his or her epiphany.

What to avoid:

  • Try to avoid beginning the discussion with the question: Did you like the book? This can be counterproductive and lead to an emotional versus a rational analysis of the text.
  • Attempt to limit one vocal member's domination of the discussion.
